Wires and Cables: Williams Pinball Factory Tour
Wires were bundled into harnesses to speed later assembly. Click photo to enlarge.
In the cable harness section, we watched technicians prepare wire for cable harnesses. Wire of many guages and colors arrived at the Williams factory on large spools. Technicians fed the spooled wire into machines that cut the wire to length and stripped the ends. These prepared wires were bundled and binned.
We gathered around a workstation where a technician combined two pieces of wire, a Molex connector, some tubing, and a microswitch into a cable harness. First the technician crimped the connector pins onto one end of each wire and inserted them into the connector housing. Then she slide black tubing over the wires to keep them neatly together. She prepared the microswitch by bending its terminals to the desired position. Finally, the technician soldered the loose wire ends onto the microswitch terminals.
This process was repeated at nearby workstations to produce the variety of cable harnesses needed for a pinball machine.
Our next stop was the playfield wiring section.
